      <image:title>Projects - firing the forge</image:title>
      <image:caption>Before we could try heating steel we needed to get a good pit of embers going. the initial wood burnt fast thanks to the added airflow from the bellows and we soon had a glowing pit of embers.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Projects - success</image:title>
      <image:caption>The bellows provided enough forced air to get several pieces of steel up to red hot forging temperature. This was a fun project and proved how well simple technology works.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Smoothing out</image:title>
      <image:caption>The main body was clamped to the former and repeatedly heated with a blow torch and allowed to air cool. This relaxed the stresses in the steel and smoothed out the shape.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Door Catch</image:title>
      <image:caption>We fashioned a door hook from a piece of 1.2mm mild steel left over from the build and welded it to the door. A bolt and nuts provide the catch to allow us to close and secure the door during operation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Finished Project</image:title>

      <image:title>Projects - Capacity</image:title>
      <image:caption>As our main focus is on knifemaking we have kept this forge small. with a single burner, we have the ability to keep two small billets or in progress knives at temperature at once, but we are not looking to forge Excalibur in here.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Platen 1</image:title>
      <image:caption>We cut a piece of steel from an RSJ we had to make the flat platen. We ended up making two platens for this grinder, one that is wider than the belt for surface grinding and one that matches our belt width for grinding bevels and corners.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The original motor we used was a 1/4 HP motor from an old drill press. When we started testing the grinder it was clear this was not good enough as the torque was too low. We bought this 3/4 HP motor which so far has proved to be quiet sufficient.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Tool's We Use - Axminster Trade series Pillar Drill</image:title>
      <image:caption>Having a decent drilling set-up for all materials is crucial to a lot of our work. The Axminster Trade series is a really serious bit of kit. We bought it as a bench mounted drill press but built a custom stand so it would fit into our workshop. The machine is a beast and so far there is no job too big or small this beauty cannot handle.</image:caption>
